A year in the making

In recent years, conversations around books, education, and access to information have grown louder and more urgent. For many of us, the turning point came not from headlines or political debates, but from witnessing firsthand an attack on our school or public library.
This guide, Turning the Page: an Advocate's Guide to the Freedom to Read, was created by everyday parents who felt compelled to speak up, organize, and support one another in protecting the right to read. We’re not lawyers or politicians. We’re public school parents that share a belief that all young people deserve access to a wide range of ideas, stories, and perspectives.
Here, you’ll find practical tips, personal stories, and tools to help you become a confident advocate in your own school district, library board, or neighborhood. Whether you’re just getting started or already speaking out, this guide is for you. Together, we can protect the right to read—for our kids, and for generations to come.
We believe this information should be available to all interested advocates, so please share this page with friends and neighbors (instead of sharing the download of the guide directly). This ensures that we can reach out to everyone using the workbook when a new version is available and provide access to additional information and events ad they become available.
We wanted to make this guide free to everyone, but we have a vision to build up a small team to offer ongoing support, trainings, and coaching opportunities for new advocates from across the country. If you can afford to financially support our work, we would greatly appreciate it. Once you complete the donation form on this page, you will receive an emailed receipt with a link to download your copy of the guide.
If financial support isn't an option at this time, please complete the sign-up form on this page to get your download link and our bi-monthly newsletter with additional information and to support your advocacy.
